Cross Blogging With Debra Conrad: How Do YOU Handle Email?
Debra Conrad of DebraConrad.com and I are probably having too much fun with our cross blogging conversation, but don’t tell anybody.
I get in trouble for just about everything…
She’s got another question for me, and it’s a doozy.
Dan… what are your tips for the best way to handle email?
Hooboy.
My best tip would have to be: Schedule your email checks at regular well-spaced intervals. No matter what, you ain’t that important and neither is the email that it can’t wait for two hours minimum, preferably as long as four.
So if it’s an eight hour stretch, I’d peek twice. Ideally. Love to say that’s what I always do, but I admit I slip. Too much.
And I also know there’s no one emailing me for hot stock tips, although I do hear from lots of nice Nigerian folks.
Okay, that’s it. That’s all the advice I’m fit to give on the subject because that’s all the advice I follow myself. Mostly.
I just let it come and delete as I go. Granted, a lot may come at certain times. Fortunately, I know what I expect to get for the most part and I click “Select all”, uncheck what I want to keep and delete the rest.
On rare occasion, I’ll unsubscribe from a newsletter or two if they’re particularly rude and obnoxious. But sometimes they’re the ones I WANT to check out just to see what they wrote in some apparent stupor and had the absence of mind to send to their list of people. I can then highlight their brain deadness to others and say “Can you BELIEVE what this guy (sorry, guys, but it’s almost always a guy) had the nerve to write to his list?!? What a bonehead!!!”
They’ll laugh and say “Yeah, a real bonehead” and make note never to be so boneheaded while a few bonehead wannabes quietly erase all trace of the copycat email they were also gonna send.
That reminds me…I need to fire up my Aweber account and tell my lists about this blog.
I think they’d appreciate that. None of that bonehead stuff, though.
Here’s a question for you, Debra:
Connections are everything these days, or so all the experts real and imagined like to say. What are your favorite ways to stay connected and why?
